  2. This place looks extravagant.

I grew up in libraries, you know. In a small town like Crowley, the library was my wrinkle in time. I traveled to so many worlds and came to know such extraordinary people and tales—all without ever leaving my book of the moment!

    Thanks for the memories ...

  4. Hi sg, thanks, we've been waiting so long for this, my first reaction was... can I really go inside? The mayor had been speaking at the ceremonies, I just stopped in after that, on my way home. love, sp

  5. Hi Glenn! yes, a library is really a good deal. It's kind of surprising, in this rough world, that such a thing still exists. The new Norman Mayer Library is about as radical an upgrade as I've ever seen post-Katrina. hooray! thanks, sp

  7. OH SP, Thank You for posting pics! I missed the grand opening and was so sad about it. This library is so special to me...I grew up in that library. It's soo beautiful! I'm gonna have to be ready for the wave of emotions that, I'm sure is gonna hit me when I walk in there.

  8. Dear bc, I know you will love it. The libraries I've worked in have never been Day One New!! In fact, the building I work in now is ... well, it was new in about 1939. But this Norman Mayer will have a long and happy life. thanks, sp

  10. I'll try this again. Just wanted to add a little more information. The old Gentilly Branch of the New Orleans Public Library, also called the Norman Mayer Library, was destroyed by the Katrina flood in 2005. After a long hot time, the moldy contents were removed, and the building was demolished, along with the rest of the block, in 2009 (see my previous post, neighborhood progress). Early in 2011, the beams of the new larger library were going up (see the human element). By Oct. 2011, this building and another library in Jefferson Parish both seemed to be almost-ready. Now, yesterday's festivities were the actual Grand Opening. A wonderful success except for the time-line, which was slow because of the financial involvement of FEMA and all levels of government. sp
