    1. Hi Glenn, John Kennedy Toole thought that if A Confederacy of Dunces was ever published, he would never be allowed to live in New Orleans again. It was what we would now call politically incorrect, and I used the phrase "sufficiently offensive" because that's the kind of thing Ignatius would have said (as a compliment). But to answer your question, this cloud came from my own brain, after my recent 3rd reading of the book, which I wanted to do after reading the new Toole biography, Butterfly in the Typewriter, by Cory MacLauchlin. And after 4 years of working in the archives in Jones Hall. It may seem that sometimes I have an unhealthy obsession with dead people, but on a good day I think of it more as paying respects to the people who came before. Most of them deserve respect, and I am especially amazed with JK Toole and his writings. Here I am giving my impression of what was swirling around in his mind before starting to write the novel, when he was in Puerto Rico teaching English. I couldn't sleep much this week! thanks, sp
