turned into mulch

The living tree in the 2nd picture's foreground was taken down this morning and turned into mulch.

  1. Wonder what they need his space for? An expansion of the parking lot?

  2. Hi Glenn, This summer they have torn up the parking lot (where I normally park, between the main library building and Jones Hall) to improve drainage, and the lot is being elongated about twenty feet closer to Freret St. In the process, they gave the azalea bed a mohawk, which was a little distressing, but we had no idea they'd take down an oak tree. It's still a great big huge muddy mess and there's no way it will be finished by fall semester. We have heard that eventually they plan to open up the parking lot to the street at that point, but I'm not sure about the thinking, or if it will stay planned long enough to be carried out. Ideas go in and out of vogue, and the actual long-term intentions have more to do with perceived trends than local community needs. But whoever explains it, the "removal" of the tree today was premature if not completely preventable. Some of us feel bad about this. thanks, sp

  3. I am so sorry about this. That tree was probably
actually protected and they should not have taken
it down. I get very upset about trees that get
    removed like this. rrrrgggghhhh

  4. It's always so sad to see a tree go -- I cherish them like old friends. (Although I am guilty of taking the sawz-all to a wormy apple tree this spring!)

  5. Hi Sally, the thing is, they say one thing (about how beautiful and special the oak trees on campus are) and then just delete them like a little circle on an architectural drawing. To think that tree was older than all of us, and bore up under all the hurricanes that came this way. It sort of gave some of us a stomach ache. thanks, sp

  6. Hi T, the cross section of the trunk showed that it was totally healthy and, although the limbs may have looked a little bare in the spring 2009 photo at top, all those trees have actually filled in a little fuller since then. They carted off the big trunk so quickly, maybe they were told to hurry it up so nobody would notice (nothing usually happens quickly here). Maybe they will have coffee tables made out of it, I don't know. thanks for checking in & commenting, sp
